Fiona Hammond
Fiona is a mixed-media artist whose love of fibre, textiles and beads has led to an eclectic array of wearable and non-wearable artworks - particularly since 1999, though her love of creating started when she was very young.
As a self-confessed ‘creative omnivore’, Fiona loves to keep challenging her creative self by learning new techniques and playing with new materials. This allows her to meld an ever-increasing array of modalities and materials together to expand her art practice.
Her main modalities are coiled basketry, beadwork, contemporary quilting, hand-stitching, and Kumihimo braiding. Fiona’s particular passions are for making jewellery and sculptural forms. She is well-known for her love of vibrant colour and a somewhat quirky aesthetic.
Teaching is Fiona’s other life-long interest, and she has pursued this in various formats: primary school teaching (1978–1981); English teaching in Tokyo (1985–1987); Diploma of Aromatherapy teaching (2000–2005), and since late 2005 she has taught a wide array of her fibre, textile and bead-based workshops along the eastern seaboard of Australia.
Fiona has had profiles and projects published in many Australian textile art, quilting and beading magazines. She has received many awards and prizes for her work over the years, and continues to exhibit her artworks. As a founding member of Untethered Fibre Artists Inc. since its inception in 2014, Fiona has loved the challenge of expanding her art practice through the discipline of regular mentorship and exhibiting.
